  16. <p>     THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE.
  17. As a play starring monologist Lily Tomlin, this was a solo
  18. dazzle and a terrific human comedy. Through a dozen or so
  19. characters, it provided a panoramic 20-year history of American
  20. womanhood. Her film version displays volcanic emotions,
  21. precisely explored.
  22. </p>
  23. <p>     BARTON FINK. The work of two gifted brothers, Joel and
  24. Ethan Coen (Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing), this was the
  25. first film ever to accomplish the hat trick at the Cannes
  26. festival--Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. The
  27. Coens revise the legend of innocent talent corrupted by
  28. Hollywood.

  30. <p>ART
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     HOMECOMING: WILLIAM H. JOHNSON AND AFRO-AMERICA,
  33. 1938-1946. National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian
  34. Institution, Washington. These 80 paintings showcase one of
  35. America's most important but neglected painters. His works
  36. portray black experience, from the cotton patches to dance halls
  37. to city streets, in a primitive, folk-inspired style. Through
  38. March 1. A splendidly illustrated companion book, Homecoming:
  39. The Art and Life of William H. Johnson (Rizzoli; $45), provides
  40. a comprehensive look at his life and work.

  42. <p>BOOKS
  43. </p>
  44. <p>     HARLOT'S GHOST by Norman Mailer (Random House; $30). This
  45. huge (1,300-plus pages) novel starts off briskly with some
  46. Mailerian melodrama and metaphysics and then bogs down in a
  47. recapitulation of one man's life in the CIA from the middle
  48. 1950s to the early '60s. It ends with the three most ominous
  49. words in recent American literature: "TO BE CONTINUED."

  51. <p>     SCARLETT by Alexandra Ripley (Warner Books; $24.95). This
  52. gilding-the-cornflower sequel to Margaret Mitchell's Gone With
  53. the Wind is at last in the bookstores, amid megabucks of hype.
  54. And frankly, my dear, it's not worth a damn.
  55. </p>
  56. <p>TELEVISION
  57. </p>
  58. <p>     CHILDHOOD (PBS, debuting Oct. 14, 8 p.m. on most
  59. stations). This seven-week series takes a broad cross-cultural
  60. look at the process of growing up. If the psychological insights
  61. don't win you over, the cute babies will.
  62. </p>
  63. <p>     THE WORLD SERIES (CBS, starting Oct. 19, 8 p.m. EDT). CBS
  64. has thus far taken a beanball in the ratings with its expensive
  65. baseball package. But a seven-game Series would go a long way
  66. toward making the network feel better.
  67. </p>
  68. <p>     DYNASTY: THE REUNION (ABC, Oct. 20 and 22, 9 p.m. EDT).
  69. And while the Series unfolds, ABC and NBC are
  70. counterprogramming with a slew of female-oriented movies and
  71. mini-series. Here, the Carringtons and Colbys return for a fresh
  72. segment of Lifestyles of the Rich and Once-Famous.

  74. <p>MUSIC
  75. </p>
  76. <p>     SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES: BETTER DAYS
  77. (Impact). Juke-joint Nirvana, with Southside smoking his way
  78. through 11 smash tunes, mostly written by Little Steven Van
  79. Zandt, and holding his own with some heavy company, including
  80. Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. When Springsteen joins
  81. Johnny and Little Steven to sing It's Been a Long Time, you can
  82. hear friendship recalled and solidified--and a touch of
  83. history being made.

  85. <p>     THE ALLEN TOUSSAINT COLLECTION (Reprise). The king of New
  86. Orleans R. and B.--one of the great all-time musical figures,
  87. in fact, in a town where legends come around as regularly as
  88. lunchtime. This is a package of 16 solid sides, including From
  89. a Whisper to a Scream and What Do You Want the Girl to Do?,
  90. culled from his middle-period, major-label work. The very
  91. definition of funk; if you don't know Toussaint, your ears have
  92. never been baptized.

  94. <p>     MISA FLAMENCA (Nimbus). Guitarist Paco Pena has adapted
  95. the texts of the Roman Catholic liturgy and set them to the
  96. extroverted melodic and rhythmic emotions of flamenco to compose
  97. this earthy, passionate Mass. His musicians and singers
  98. charismatically express love of freedom, resignation under
  99. oppression and an unconquerable faith that soars from an
  100. anguished soul.

  102. <p>THEATER
  103. </p>
  104. <p>     INHERIT THE WIND. What better way to celebrate the Bill of
  105. Rights' 200th anniversary than to revive this drama about the
  106. clash between freedom of speech and freedom of religion in
  107. Tennessee's 1925 "monkey trial" about evolution? Staged five
  108. times a weekend through Dec. 15 in an actual courtroom of
  109. Philadelphia City Hall, it features Malachy McCourt as William
  110. Jennings Bryan, and Jason Miller, Pulitzer-prizewinning author
  111. of That Championship Season, as his adversary, Clarence Darrow.
  112. </p>
  113. <p>     OUR LADY OF THE TORTILLA. When he's not winning Emmys for
  114. writing Sesame Street, Luis Santeiro is a shrewd satirist of
  115. fellow Cuban Americans, as in this off-Broadway piece about a
  116. woman's religious vision arising from scorch marks on her
  117. dinner.

  119. <p>ETCETERA
  120. </p>
  121. <p>     SPACESHIP EARTH (Worldlink). Tales of deforestation and
  122. ozone depletion set to the music of Sting, the B-52s and Ziggy
  123. Marley. This superb TV primer on the threats to planet Earth,
  124. now available on home video, is simple enough for children to
  125. understand and compelling enough to make their parents pay
  126. attention as well.
  127. </p>
  128. <p>     RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET
  129. </p>
  130. <p>     Maybe the college professors think Shakespeare produced
  131. only 37 plays, but this off-Broadway lark is the Bard's
  132. long-lost science-fiction rock musical. Small of scale and free
  133. of spirit, it features the obligatory mad monster, fair maiden,
  134. evil scientist and heroic space pilot. Sci-fi junkies will
  135. recognize the plot from the 1956 MGM flick Forbidden Planet,
  136. which the more literary-minded in turn saw as an amalgam of
  137. Shakespeare's The Tempest and dime-store Freud. (The killer
  138. demons were escapees from the id of a man who, like most sci-fi
  139. antiheroes, tried to play God.) Writer-director Bob Carlton
  140. blended that cult-movie narrative with snippets of dialogue,
  141. some in blank verse (and occasionally in blank mind), and a
  142. stompfest of '50s and '60s rock standards (Shake, Rattle and
  143. Roll; Great Balls of Fire; Born to Be Wild). London bestowed on
  144. it the Olivier award, passing over Miss Saigon and Andrew Lloyd
  145. Webber's Aspects of Love. Now the song and story are back where
  146. they were born, in the U.S.A., and it all makes for a
  147. delightfully silly evening.
